Tasman District Council: Cat Bylaw

All domestic cats over the age of six months need to be microchipped, registered with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR), and de-sexed. Exemptions to de-sexing are enabled where a cat is registered with a nationally recognised breeders body, or if a vet considered the procedure would adversely affect the health or welfare of the cat. The bylaw comes into effect from 1 January 2025. However, if you already have a cat, you have until June 2026 to comply with the bylaw.

Tararua District Council: Cat Bylaw

Keeping Cats Except with the approval of Council, no person may keep more than three cats on a Premises. Every cat over six months old must be: a. Microchipped and the cat’s microchip registered with New Zealand Companion Animals Register; and b. Desexed. Clauses 7.1 and 7.2 do not apply to lawfully established vets; or the SPCA or similar registered charities; or lawfully established cat boarding Premises. If, in the opinion of Council, the keeping of cats on a Premises is, or is likely to become a Nuisance, Council may, by written notice, require the number of cats kept on the Premises to be reduced; or take other such precautions as may be considered necessary by Council to reduce the Nuisance effects. It is the duty of the owner or occupier of the Premises to abate the Nuisance as required in the notice within the time period specified in that notice.
